Melon
1 was originally formed as a partnership between New York based Lawrence J
Lapide Inc. and South Carolina based FH Dicks co. Both 3rd generation
watermelon companies Melon 1 combined the growing, harvesting and shipping
expertise of FH Dicks with the distribution, packaging and sales
capabilities of Lapide Inc.
Our ability to provide customers with a door to door solution allowed Melon
1 to grow rapidly. Bringing in Rich Chastain as a third generation
watermelon farmer from Florida gave us increased acreage and continued
growth.
As demand from customers changed from shipping bulk product to
bins, Melon 1 and its field division C&L packing built packing sheds in
Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Delaware and Maryland. We also
purchased electronic sizing equipment to give customers the highest quality
of product possible every single time.
Lapide’s acquisition of Texas based Warren Produce in partnership with
Jimmy Henderson rounded out Melon 1’s year-round capabilities. Our strength
has always been our farmers. With some partnerships going back over 20
years, Melon 1 represents the best watermelon growers in the eastern United
States. Their expertise, using the best varieties and growing techniques,
combined with Melon 1’s harvesting experience, assures our customers
consistent excellent quality watermelons.
